Managing noxious and prohibited weeds
Did you know that in Canada the management of invasive species is jointly regulated by both provincial and federal laws? While the federal government regulates the trade and shipping of invasive species, it is up to provincial governments to manage their spread on public and private lands and to conserve and manage our natural resources. In addition to invasive species acts, most provinces have a Weed Control Act to help prevent the spread of noxious and prohibited noxious weeds.
For example, in Alberta, the current Weed Control Act was put in place in 2010. This act allows provincial ministers to list any noxious and prohibited noxious weeds that present a risk to the economy or the environment. Once a weed is listed, it is the responsibility of private landowners, local municipalities and crown land managers to destroy prohibited noxious weeds and to control noxious weeds. Currently, there are 46 weed species listed as prohibited noxious and 29 as noxious in Alberta. Many of the prohibited noxious weeds on the list are not currently present in Alberta, and it is up to us to keep it that way.
